Having started very early in life, I've had the chance to learn a great many stitches, some fancy, some utilitarian, and have a few favorites. If I had to choose the "best" stitch, I guess it would be the ladder stitch. This stitch hides seams so well that I would almost classify it a decorative stitch, as in "improving the finished appearance".You can find a PDF tutorial here for the ladder stitch.
